She was torn into two pieces. Her once sturdy bark was chipping away, until she hurt. Her evergreen leaves ripped into pieces while her unbranched stem tried to hold on to the vulnerable sand between her roots. She hurt ‘til she felt numb, and finally let go of her last coconut.
This reminds me of a book I read when I was younger called "The Fall of Freddy the Leaf" -- it was about a leaf that grew up on a tree in Spring and made friends with all the nearby leaves. They had a wonderful summer together but by the time Autumn came around it was difficult for Freddy to have to say goodbye to all his friends as they shed, before he too finally falls to the ground. It's actually a book that was written to help children deal with death but there is nothing childish about it. I'm not saying your story reminds me of a child's book, per se, but that the story you tell has a sorrow about it that took me back several years. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It actually is a good metaphor for kids to deal with death. Hadn't thought of that :)
